Company History
In 1908 the Secretary of War established a Marine Division in the Office of the Chief of Engineers, Washington, D.C., to design and supervise construction of the Corps' floating plant. In 1938 the Division was assigned to the Philadelphia District in order to facilitate contract and construction supervision, and redesignated the Marine Design Division.
Over the years, the Marine Design Division not only kept abreast of current technology, but also pioneered a number of design innovations including direct pilothouse control (1924), controllable pitch propellers (1958), enclosed direct-type bow thruster on an American dredge (1960), and a floating nuclear electric power plant (1960s), and many complex floating cranes.
In 1979 the Marine Design Division was reassigned to the Corps' newly formed Water Resource Support Center, and wsa redesignated the Marine Design Center, remaining in Philadelphia.
Between 1988 and 1990, the Marine Design Center was reassigned to USACE Headquarters, Civil Works, and established as a Field Operating Activity and Center of Expertise within USACE.
Today, the Marine Design Center remains a Center of Expertise, operating out of Philadelphia, supporting the USACE fleet, operations and mission across the country and internationally.
