Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) is owned by Progress Rail Services, A Caterpillar Company. EMD is the world's largest builder of diesel-electric locomotives for all commercial railway applications, and a leading provider of diesel engines for marine propulsion, offshore and land-based oil well rigs and stationary power generation.

In addition to its manufacturing activities, EMD has an extensive aftermarket business offering customers replacement parts, maintenance solutions, and a range of value-added services.

Company History

Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) was founded in 1922 and acquired by Progress Rail Services (PRS) in 2010. In 2006, Caterpillar acquired PRS.

EMD has been serving the rail industry for more than 90 years along with the power products market. It has facilities and operations in: LaGrange, Illinois, (administrative offices; engineering, sales and marketing; component manufacturing - engine, generator, main electrical cabinet, turbochargers; remanufacturing center - engine, turbochargers, electronics; Muncie, Indiana, and Sete Lagoas, Brazil, (locomotive final assembly, paint and test); Other facilties include: United Kingdom (parts distribution and maintenance); Mexico (traction motors); and International locomotive and component manufacturing partnerships.
