The Spaceport Company is building the future of spaceports, starting with offshore launch. We are a small, passionate, and accomplished team supporting the development, construction, operation, and maintenance of offshore spaceports for various solid and liquid rocket launch, landing, VTOL, and UUV or UAV systems.
As a Naval Architect/ Marine Engineer focused on the design, development, construction and operation of offshore vessels needed to launch and recover rockets offshore. In this role, you will be responsible for analyzing existing vessels, developing new vessels, creating novel concepts of operation for many different types of rockets, interfacing with USCG/ABS, and supporting the offshore operations team. However, since we are a small team, we all wear many hats, so you also need to be able to learn new things quickly and be willing to help anyone on the team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluate existing offshore vessels, and develop modification design, costs and schedule estimates to modify these vessels for use as offshore launch and recovery platforms.
Develop and architect high-level design concepts and novel approaches to offshore spaceports.
Design modifications, systems, new vessels and create fabrication drawings.
Interface with external entities such as ABS, USCG, various Port Authorities, or the FAA.
Perform detailed analyses to provide guidance for the offshore operations team, such as Stability analyses, tonnage calculations, vessel loading, ballasting, wind loading, and any other regulatory required documents.
Estimate concept costs.
Work with engineers, marine staff, and technicians to ensure requirements, deliverables, budgets and dates are met.
Assist with shipyard oversight, when needed.
Assist offshore testing and operations, when needed.
Build and manage a reliable network of vessel brokers, ports, and shipyards across the world.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Eligibility for this position is limited to individuals who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.
Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering
Extremely knowledgeable and proficient in CFR’s and ABS Rules associated with marine vessel design and operations.
Professional experience using parametric CAD packages (e.g. Autodesk or Rhino) to model parts, assemblies and generating drawings.
Previous experience performing dynamic and static stability analyses and generating RAOs.
Professional experience using Stability software such as ProteusDS ShipMo3d, GHS, Maxsurf, DelftSHip and/or AutoHydro/AutoLoad
At least two years of professional experience designing and analyzing marine vessels and mechanical structures in a marine environment.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Demonstrated experience managing multiple development projects, prioritizing and executing tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Licensed Professional Engineer in Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering.
Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment including daily interactions with technicians, engineers, and managers across multiple time zones and remote locations.
Structural and mechanical design competency
Prior experience in an offshore environment and/or with marine vessel operations
Self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail
Professional experience using a high-end hydrodynamics analysis software package(s) to estimate vessel motions (ProteusDS ShipMo3d, Orca3d, Ansys AQWA, and/or Maxsurf Motion)
Professional experience using a CFD analysis software package(s) (Simerics, Star-ccm, and/or ANSYS Fluent)
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position is subject to pre-employment screening, including drug and alcohol testing and a physical examination, as well as random drug and alcohol testing during employment.
Must be able to perform job duties that require climbing through ships while in shipyards, dry dock or offshore for inspection and evaluation purposes.
When necessary, must be willing to work long hours and weekends to support launch and critical timelines
Ability to work on offshore vessels
LOCATION
The engineering and operations team is headquartered in Cocoa, Fl. This role will be in the Cocoa location. Must be willing to relocate if outside of a commute area.
Travel required on an as needed basis, ~25% of time.
